Women’s Recap

Blanca Fernandez of Temple took the mile in 4:50.11 ahead of Laura Williamson of UConn, who finished in 4:50.71. Fernandez, who is originally from Spain, went on to win the 3000m in 9:29.77.

“I’m pretty excited,” said Fernandez. “I guess everything was a surprise because the mile was two hours before the 3k. So, I felt I couldn’t do it, but now I’m pretty happy.”

Cheyenne Hutchinson of East Carolina and Sade Mariah Greenidge of Houston ran under the meet’s 60m hurdle record to finish in 8.26 and 8.32, respectively.

Audrey Jean-Baptiste of Tulsa recorded a big 52.82 win in the 400m.

“It feels awesome,” said Jean-Baptiste. “I’ve been wanting to break 53 since last year, so it feels awesome to finally do it.”

Houston’s Bria Carter won the 60m dash in 7.40. She outleaned J’Nea Bellamy of UCF, who ran 7.42, for the win.

“I don’t even have words for it,” said Carter when asked how she felt about the win. “I’ve waited for this for so long and for it to finally happen is just amazing.”

The final lap of the women’s 800m was an all out battle. Faith Dismuke of UConn, Maya Williamson of Memphis and Kat Vodopia of UConn were close while rounding the final turn, but it was Dismuke who was able to cross the line first in 2:07.99. Williamson took second in 2:08.18 and Vodopia was third in 2:08.85.

“My goal was just to get first place and get the points,” said Dismuke. “I’ve always had Husky pride and that’s what gets me through.”

Lilla McMillan of Tulane took control of the 200m early in the race to win in 23.75.

Erika Hurd reached 1.75m (5’ 8.75”) to win the high jump and Odrine Belot of UConn won the triple jump with a final mark of 12.86m (42’ 2.25”).

UCF closed the meet for the women with a victory in the 4x400m relay in 3:39.15.

UConn won the Championships in team scoring with 108 points, UCF was second with 86.5 points and SMU third with 83.

Men’s Recap

Adam Palamar secured a win in mile for Tulsa. His 4:04.88 clocking was a meet record and well ahead of the field. Michael O’Donnell of UConn took second in 4:06.36 and Corentin Louis of Memphis was third in 4:08.85.

Isaac Williams of Houston ran one of the season’s fastest times in the 60m hurdles. Williams stopped the clock at 7.88 with Cincinnati’s Bryan Williams following in 8.02.

Bryce Robinson of Tulsa won the 400m in 46.75 before closing amazingly fast in the 200m to win in 21.01.

“I was really nervous because this was my first open 400 ever,” said Robinson, who also helped his team take second in the 4x400m relay. “I just had to do it for my team.”

Houston’s Drevan Anderson Kaapa returned to win his second conference title in the 800m.  He stopped the clock in 1:50.70 just before Tulsa’s Elijah Silva, who held on for 1:50.76.

“I’ve been through so much with injuries and sickness,” said Kaapa. “With this being my last season I just told myself to dig deep and do what you have to do to win.”

Avion Jones cleared 2.14m (7’ .25”) in the high jump to break the meet’s record.

Cameron Cornelius’ mark of 18.11m (59’ 5”) was good enough for first place in the shot put.

The men's team Championship title was up for grabs when Houston and Tulsa battled to the finish in the 4x400m relay. Houston's Kappa, who won the 800m, and Tulsa's Robinson, who won the 400m, closed in 3:13.53 and 3:13.96.

Houston won the Championships in team scoring with 135 points, Tulsa scored 134 points for second and UConn placed third with 131 points.
